Hi Colleagues and Friends,

We are pleased to announce that our next (and first!) Dean of Enrollment Management is Brian McCauley (C’78).

Brian brings 30 years of high-level experience in government and business. His expertise in management, sales, marketing, business planning, and business development should serve Principia College well. After graduating from Principia College with a major in Communications Management, he began his career as Assistant to the Governor of Washington State handling all senior appointments and overseeing the affairs of seventeen state agencies. Brian played major roles (including developing marketing strategy) in eight governors' and US senators' campaigns. After serving in government, Brian was attracted to entrepreneurial business; he helped found and was president of two substantial companies in satellite television. Brian's entrepreneurial experience was helpful when he became Managing Publisher of The Christian Science Monitor where he was responsible for all of the paper's business operations and played a major role in developing and implementing a new strategy for the paper and a new marketing campaign that helped increase circulation.

From 2001 to 2006, Brian fulfilled a long-time goal by teaching at Dexter School, an independent boys' school in Brookline, Massachusetts. He also coached several sports there. Most recently, Brian was the Executive Vice President of Webster & Company and negotiated an agreement for Webster to open new Ralph Lauren Home stores across America.

Brian is married and has two daughters. His wife Annie is the Executive Director of Longyear Museum. His daughter Sara will be a  senior at St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts, and his daughter Hannah  will be an eighth grader at Principia Middle School. Brian has always been active in church and is currently First Reader at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Wellesley, Massachusetts. Beginning in 1995, Brian spent nine years working closely with campers at Camps Newfound and Owatonna during the years his wife served as Director of Camp Newfound, building strong relationships with high school and college age youth. Additionally, he has taught Sunday School to older students for over 15 years.  He is the author of "The Names of Maine," a bestseller with over 27,000 copies sold and is the co-author of "The Names of Cape Cod."

He has been a Prin Club President and has served on Principia's National Executive Committee. While at Prin, Brian was House President and Student Body President. (Interestingly, in the latter capacity, he served on the College Executive Committee!) He has an Ed.M. in Curriculum and Teaching with a focus on character education from Boston University.

In more good news for enrollment management, we note that Becky Barthelmess (who had been glancing northward for the past few months) has agreed to permanently return to her position as Associate Director of Admissions. We can hardly say enough about Becky's extraordinary willingness to serve Principia as Interim Director of Admissions for the past two years. Neither the administration nor she ever intended the "interim" duties to last so long, but she has persisted with intelligence, experience, judgment, and grace through a very challenging time in our admissions activity. She has assembled and motivated a strong team who is selflessly devoted to making the Principia opportunity evident to every candidate. The strong admissions classes of last fall and this fall attest (in one modest measure) to her abilities.

Please join us in thanking Becky and welcoming Brian!
